National Donut Day, Part I: Kreme of the Crop?

Happy National Donut Day!

In celebration of this delightful holiday—the origins of which may be tied to the Salvation Army—I’d like to know what donut does it for you. But before you do, here’s food for thought.

Regular readers know that my favorite donuts are the Chocolate Frosted (Dunkin’ Donuts) and the Walnut Crunch (Tim Hortons). And if you read my last piece, you know I’m lobbying the donut gods for a new donut: The Sour Cream Sunrise.

But of course this isn’t all about me. Below, I’ve listed a few of my favorite hockey players and their favorite donuts:

*Mike “the Eagle” Chase: Boston Kreme (Dunkin’ Donuts)
*Aaron Sherman: Butternut (DD)
*Hal Gill: Boston Kreme (DD)
*Mike Schneider: Blueberry (DD)
*Aaron Ward: Boston Kreme (DD)
*Peter Anastos: Pumpkin Spice (DD)
*Billy Whynot: Boston Kreme (DD)

You’ve spotted a trend or two, right? The Boston Kreme seems to be the odds-on favorite to win bragging rights, and Timmy Hortons (full disclosure: I’m not a Krispy Kreme fan) has not yet made the list.

Please post your thoughts below or send e-mail to jimfdwyer (at) gmail (dot) com. I may not mention your name or your Internet handle (unless maybe you add a funny anecdote), but I will compile the results and then post them here this weekend.

Until then, dear reader (and donut eater), bon appetite.

Tim Hortons - hands down! Either the blueberry or the apple fritter. Their Boston Creme puts DD to shame (put that in the same category as Boston Pizza restaurants in the Canadian Maritime.

Hi, Jim. Bill Dwyer from the All Day Power Play. Although possibly not a true donut, my vote is the glazed cruller or "stick" (one-piece of course).
